Good news - I PASSED MY DEFENSE! It's over, people! I defended in front of my committee on Tuesday and it went really, really well - much better than I expected. Of course, after the last few months, my expectations are quite low, but that just means I can be pleasantly surprised, right? I'm so relieved to be done and proud of all of my hard work in the last 4.5 years.
The bad news - I have shingles. And they're terrible.
My rash is in the same area as this old guy. Other than a sharing an old person's affliction, I'm hoping that's where the resemblance ends.
I think I'm on the other side of the worst of it, but damn. We went on vacation to Colorado (which was really fun), and at first I thought I came back with bug bites. Turns out you don't normally get stabbing pain from bug bites, and the doctor diagnosed me with shingles. The pain quickly got worse from last Thursday to Saturday, and I went on Vicoden and a medication for nerve pain called Gabapentin, along with an anti-viral. As soon as I started taking the Gabapentin, I could not hold anything down, including water, which was kind of scary (and MISERABLE). I'm doing better now though - able to eat and also working on reducing my pain meds so I can hopefully get back to work.
They say that shingles often occur in younger people from stress, which I've definitely been under lately. I guess it's good that it didn't happen before I was done with my thesis, but it was disappointing that when I was expecting to be celebrating and relaxing, I was in a lot of pain.
But this too shall pass, and I can look forward to getting my diploma in the mail in August. Booyah!
